At PH Engineering, we believe that the best equipment is not just efficient—it is safe. Industrial machinery like Ribbon Blenders and Screw Conveyors involve high-torque motors, moving parts, and heavy-duty agitation, which require strict operational discipline.
To ensure your team stays safe and your operations remain compliant, implement these five non-negotiable safety protocols in your facility.
1. Mandatory Lock-Out/Tag-Out (LOTO)
Never perform maintenance—or even a visual inspection—on a Ribbon Mixer or Conveyor while it is energized. Every employee authorized to clean or service the machine must have their own lock for the power source. This prevents accidental startup while someone is working on the blades or the intake area.
2. Guarding All Pinch Points
Conveyor belts, pulleys, and exposed auger flights are major “pinch points.” All drive components and rotating shafts must be covered with bolted, tamper-proof guards. Even if a machine looks simple, never operate it with a missing guard or an open inspection hatch.
3. Emergency Stop (E-Stop) Accessibility
Your E-Stop buttons should be within arm’s reach of the operator at the feed point, the discharge point, and the main control panel. Test these buttons during every shift change to ensure they are fully functional. A single non-responsive E-stop can be the difference between a minor incident and a serious injury.
4. Proper Loading Procedures
Operators should never use hands, shovels, or tools to push material into a running Screw Conveyor or Grain Loader. Always use mechanical feed hoppers. If a blockage occurs, the machine must be powered down, locked out, and the pressure relieved before anyone attempts to clear the material.
5. Regular Training and Signage
Safety is a culture, not a one-time instruction. Ensure that all operators are trained specifically on the equipment they handle. Use clear, high-visibility warning signs on all blenders and conveyors that indicate “High Voltage,” “Moving Parts,” and “Authorized Personnel Only.”
Safety starts with better design.
At PH Engineering, we integrate safety features like reinforced guarding, emergency stop interlocks, and dust-tight seals into all our manufacturing processes. If you are updating your facility to meet modern safety standards, take a look at our Industrial Screw Conveyors and Ribbon Blender range, which are built with operator safety as a primary design requirement.
